Like many an immigrant family, when Joan Barrington and Harry Millar married, they brought together family origins from several groups – in their case, the Millar line, entirely from Northern Ireland, deriving from the Ulster Plantation; the Barringtons from the English Midland’s industrial hub; the convicts transported from England to Australia in the late 1700s and early 1800s; and finally one couple from old Ireland. The Millar line of the family and the Collins part of the Barrington family have their roots in Ireland and are part of these stories of Ireland’s history. Rose Collins’ mother was a Dunleavy, a Catholic from Donegal; and all families in the Millar line originated in the Protestant plantations/resettlement of Ulster/Northern Ireland. But in New Zealand the religious strife of their home country could be put behind.
